Why Exterior Signage Matters

Your Building Sign Is Saying Something — Make Sure It's the Right Thing

Your building sign is the first judgment a customer makes — before they walk in, before they find you on a map. A faded vinyl wrap says one thing. Fabricated metal lettering that holds its finish through sun, rain, and freeze cycles says another.

The question we hear most about exterior signage: will it actually hold up outdoors? In coastal or high-moisture spots, we specify 316 stainless steel on fabricated metal letters — the same alloy grade used in marine hardware. It won't pit or streak the way standard stainless can.
Which matters when your sign is bolted to a brick facade and you're not taking it down to repaint every two years.

Sign Types for Every Exterior

Every Exterior Sign Type, Built to the Same Standard

Letters, logos, lit signs, plaques, and monument lettering — whatever format your building calls for, we fabricate it for the outdoors and stand behind it. Here's what we build.

Painted gold dimensional acrylic letters on an exterior storefront wall

Your business name, cut and fabricated in solid metal, acrylic, or painted aluminum — exterior building letters sized for the wall and readable from the road. Every letter ships with a full-size mounting template and hardware, and non-lit letters carry a lifetime warranty against fade, peel, or fail. Order standard lettering online, or send a custom layout for a same-day quote.

Solid stainless steel fabricated letters and logo on a stadium exterior

We reproduce your logo as a dimensional custom sign — routed, layered, and color-matched to your exact brand spec, in metal or acrylic. Send us your vector art and we'll return a to-scale proof before anything goes to production, so the mark on your building matches the one on your letterhead. Non-lit logos carry a lifetime warranty.

front lit channel letters and logo with capsule for outside restaurant and bar sign

Illuminated letters that read after dark, with the light pushing through the face — the standard for restaurants, retail, and anything facing evening traffic. All our lighted exterior signs run low-voltage; most installs don't need an electrician unless there's no power near the mounting point. Lit signs carry a 10-year warranty on letter materials and cans, and 3 years on the LEDs and power supplies. Lead time runs a little longer than non-lit lettering.

painted matte black backlit letters with warm white leds on restaurant exterior - saint marc

Reverse-lit letters that throw a halo of light onto the wall behind them — a premium, upscale read for hotels, corporate faces, and lobbies you enter from outside. The LEDs sit hidden behind each letter, so you see the glow, not the source. Like all our lit signs, halo-lit runs low-voltage and carries a 10-year warranty on the letter materials and cans, 3 years on the LEDs and power supplies.

Brushed brass fabricated letters for And Sons Chocolatiers on an exterior facade

Dedication plaques, address markers, and building ID cast or etched in solid bronze and aluminum — real metal, not a coating, which is why it reads permanent and carries a lifetime warranty against fade, peel, or fail, indoors or out. When you want the weight and authority of true cast metal, this is the one. Send your text and layout and we'll proof it to scale before we pour.

Carved HDU monument sign with painted gold lettering, post-mounted at Queens Court

CNC-routed, hand-finished dimensional signs in weatherproof HDU or real wood — for storefronts, estate entrances, and freestanding monuments alike. HDU won't warp or rot outdoors, and real bronze, brass, or gold-leaf plating gives you a cast-metal look at a fraction of a plaque's cost and weight. We've carved federal seals, police badges, and dedication monuments; most orders ship in 3–4 weeks with a 5-year warranty.

EXTERIOR SIGNS BY INDUSTRY

Exterior Signage Built for Your Industry

Different buildings punish signs differently — grease and heat, salt air, daily sun, or just the need to look established before a client reaches the door. Here's what we recommend, and what we've built, for the industries that order from us most.

Brushed copper dimensional logo on a restaurant exterior wall

Exterior signs for restaurants and hotels take a beating — grease, humidity, UV, temperature swings. For upscale concepts we recommend brass or copper, because both patina naturally and never look cheap the way a painted channel letter eventually does. Every letter material is backed for life against fade, peel, or fail.

Polished fabricated brass letters on an exterior building facade

Storefront signage has to win attention against neighboring businesses and read from a car moving at 35 mph. We build bold, high-contrast letters and logos sized for your fascia — solid metal for permanence, or anodized aluminum when the budget matters and the finish still has to last. Most non-lit storefront runs ship in 8–12 business days - lit signs add 6-8 business days.

Polished stainless steel exterior building letters mounted outdoors

Banks, law offices, and corporate campuses use commercial exterior signs to signal stability before a client walks in. Brushed or satin stainless is our go-to here — it weathers without looking weathered, reads authoritative without shouting, and never needs the repainting a powdercoated finish eventually will. Lifetime warranty on all letter materials.

Fabricated aluminum exterior letters installed for a U.S. Air Force facility

Government and military signage has to read authoritative without being loud — flat-cut or raised metal letters in brushed stainless or matte aluminum, built to a spec sheet. We've fabricated exterior signage for federal agencies, military branches, and school districts, including working through the FAA's mounting requirements on a single-panel install before it shipped. Every letter material is warrantied for life.

Painted white metal exterior letters for Maine Health, stud-mounted to the building

Medical facilities need signage that's easy to read from a moving vehicle and holds up through years of weather without a maintenance call. We build flat-cut aluminum letters in clean, low-glare sans-serif faces — professional, legible, and low-maintenance. Solid metal ships in 8–12 business days, warrantied for life.

Cast bronze sign with an oxidized prismatic-edge finish at a building entrance

Apartment communities, HOAs, and mixed-use developments need exterior signage that looks custom without a custom price. Anodized aluminum holds its color for years without touch-up — the finish goes all the way through, so there's no coat to chip off. We build entrance letters, monument lettering, and building ID that match across a whole property.

NOT SURE HOW BIG?

What Size Should Your Exterior Sign Be?

Rule of thumb: about 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet you need it read from. Our Letter Visibility Chart does the math for you — heights matched to viewing distance, by letter style.

Materials Built for the Outdoors
Choosing the right material for your exterior sign
Every material here survives outdoors — the difference is how your exterior sign letters look in year ten and what it costs to get there. Aluminum covers most buildings; stainless and brass step up for contemporary or upscale looks; alloy 316 owns coastal and marine. This is the same walkthrough we give buyers on the phone, including the part where the cheaper option is sometimes the right call.

National Rollouts

One Building or Fifty — Multi-Location Exterior Packages

When a company needs matching exterior signs across locations, we fabricate the whole program in one run and ship each sign ready to install. Exterior rollouts add two wrinkles interior ones don't — the walls change from brick to stucco to metal panel between sites, and the finish has to weather the same in Phoenix as it does in Portland. Here's how we handle both.

01 Multiple matching Lucchese exterior building signs fabricated together on the shop floor

Built in One Run

Every sign fabricated from the same batch and paint mix — so the finish matches across all your locations, whatever climate each one faces.

02 Lucchese exterior signs packaged individually for shipment to multiple locations

Packaged Individually

Each sign boxed on its own with mounting hardware specced to that site's wall — brick, stucco, metal panel, or poured concrete — plus its template and instructions.

03 Finished painted-black backlit Lucchese sign installed at one storefront location

Shipped to Every Site

Each box ships straight to its address with tracking. Local crews open one box and install — nobody redistributes crates from a central drop.

We've run multi-location exterior programs for Lucchese, Takeuchi, various military branches, and other national operations — and they come back every time they open another location.

PERMITS MADE EASY

Need a permit? Your quote already has what the city asks for.

Most municipalities require a sign permit, and landlords often want drawings before they approve the install. Every quote we send includes a to-scale proof and spec sheet — the same documents most permit applications need. We're not your permit office, but we've made the paperwork part painless.

HOW IT WORKS

From Quote to Installed — Without the Runaround

Most local shops make you schedule a site visit and wait days for a proof. We return your quote — with a to-scale mockup of your exterior building sign on your actual wall — within 24 hours.

Common Questions

Exterior Building Signs — Answered Directly

What materials hold up best on an exterior building sign?

For most outdoor building signage, fabricated aluminum is the workhorse — lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and paintable to any color. If you're in a coastal or marine environment, we recommend 316 stainless alloy specifically; it's among the most durable materials we offer and handles salt air where 304 stainless or aluminum would eventually show wear. All letter materials carry a lifetime warranty regardless of which alloy you choose.

Depends on your hours and your facade. Non-lit solid metal letters read well in daylight and typically ship in 8–12 business days — a good fit for office buildings, churches, or any location that doesn't need after-hours visibility. Lit signs — halo-lit or front-lit channel letters — add 6–8 days to production but do real work at night. If your business is open after dark or sits on a high-traffic street, the added lead time is usually worth it.

Usually yes. A vector file (.AI, .EPS, or .PDF) lets us match your font and logo exactly. For color, give us a Pantone number or a physical reference sample. If your file isn't in vector format, we can convert it — typically $20–$40. For reorders, we often have your file on record already, which speeds the whole process up.

Every order ships with a full-size paper template and mounting hardware. Most customers install themselves with a drill, level, and basic anchors — masonry bits for brick or stucco. For larger exterior signs or more complex facades, we can refer a local installer at no markup; you'd bill directly with them. We don't offer in-house installation, but the template makes the job straightforward for any competent handyman.

Most non-lit exterior signs ship in 8–12 business days - lit signs add 6-8 business days. Every exterior building sign is built to order — nothing ships from inventory. Each piece moves through art review, file prep, fabrication, finishing, paint, and a quality check before it leaves. We don't accept rush orders as a general rule because they disrupt production for other customers already in queue. If you have a hard deadline, tell us upfront — we can sometimes compress the proof and setup phase to help.

Contact us within 5 business days of delivery and send photos — photograph any damage before unpacking fully if you can. We file the shipping claim and handle repair or replacement from there. The main thing that slows a resolution down is waiting to report it, so act quickly.

Standard orders are paid upfront. On orders over $1,500, we offer a 50/50 split — 50% to start production, 50% before the sign ships. Government and military customers can submit a purchase order. For Samples: Order up to three materials or finishes and we'll ship real samples for $20 — prepaid return label in the box. Order a sign and the full $20 credits back. Decide not to, and we refund $10 once they're returned; the other $10 just covers shipping both ways.

Most local shops treat dimensional and architectural lettering as a secondary service — their core business is vinyl, printing, installs, and large commercial permitting jobs. We specialize in exactly this: fabricated exterior signs for buildings, lobbies, and facades. That focus means our pricing is typically better than local quotes and our lead times are faster, even after factoring in shipping. You get a proof the same day you request a quote, not after a site visit and a week of waiting.

Letter materials carry a lifetime warranty — and we almost never hear from a customer who's reordering because something we built failed. The environment that tests everything hardest is coastal. Salt air degrades clear coats over time, so for any outdoor building signage installed within roughly 50 miles of saltwater, we recommend anodized aluminum or 316 marine-grade stainless. Alloy 316 resists the pitting and streaking that standard 304 develops near saltwater — which is why we spec it for any install near the coast.

Usually no. All of our lighted exterior building signs run on low voltage — 12VDC or 24VDC — which is far safer than standard 120V. Most customers handle installation with a handyman or maintenance person. The one exception: if there's no power source near your planned install location, you'll need an electrician to add one. Plan for that before the sign arrives so you're not waiting on an electrician after delivery. Every lit sign ships with wiring diagrams, a 10-foot lead wire, power supply, and mounting hardware.

Rule of thumb: about 1 inch of letter height per 10 feet of viewing distance. A storefront read from the parking lot does fine at 6–8 inches; a sign read from the road wants 12 inches or more. Our Letter Visibility Chart matches heights to distance by letter style — or send a photo of the wall and the viewing distance and we'll size it for you.

Usually, yes — most municipalities require a sign permit for exterior signage, and landlords or property managers often want drawings before they'll approve an install. We're the manufacturer, not your local permit office — but the to-scale proof and spec sheet that come with every quote are what most permit applications ask for. Customers regularly submit our drawings as-is.
